Everyday: The Biltmore House Estate – This is our favorite! From their website: “Whether you’re a first-time visitor or an old friend, Biltmore has no shortage of things to do.” See video at: www.biltmore.com/visit/things-to-do

I’ll be posting more about family friendly goings on in the Asheville area this summer soon, in addition to family friendly places to eat in the area. If you’d like more information right away about Asheville’s “High Country Cuisine” (i.e. if you’re a foodie!) I highly recommend Rick McDaniel’s book, Asheville Food:: A History of High Country Cuisine (American Palate), Here’s the beginning of the intro as an “appetizer”:

“This is the somewhat unlikely tale of how a small city nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina became a food lover’s destination, an undiscovered gem that became the darling of the Food Network and the Travel Chanel.

Asheville turned into a food Mecca about a decade ago when it became a pioneer for the national farm-to-table movement, and wow, is the secret ever out…

As all these disparate puzzle pieces came together in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, national media began to notice the unlikely transformation in this sleepy Southern town. Southern Living, GQ, Bon Apetit, Conde Naste Traveler, the New York Times, CNN- soon everyone had a blurb about the cool restaurants with the hot cuisine springing up in Asheville.”

I’m actively searching for a great guide book for everything Asheville to recommend here, and for now the best I have found is The Ultimate Guide to Asheville & the Western North Carolina Mountains, 4th Edition, the newest edition of which is due out any week now. The 2011 edition available on Amazon right now (as I write) is selling for upwards of $65.00(!) so I recommend waiting until the new edition is released. (Which I will trumpet here on my blog- so stay tuned!)

Happy Trails!

Autumn & a Walk Around Biltmore Estate

I’m experimenting with a new plugin to add my watermark automatically when I upload photos to my blog library- I like that it saves me a ton of time and that I can size and position it anywhere I want. I don’t like that there are only a few fonts to choose from. You’d think that the designers of these of these things would realize that people posting a lot of photos are visual folks who are going to want a humungous selection of fonts! And even the option to easily hand-write our own autograph… anyway, this is what it is for now. I’m also about to experiment here with a new gallery plugin- so here goes- Happy Autumn!:
